Super Bowl halftime shows have an impossible task: They have to please a diverse audience and do it without offending anyone in the process. The result is an early history of Super Bowl halftime shows that were about as exciting as the punch line to a third-grader’s joke. University marching bands walked the field, playing song and dance numbers that had grandmothers clapping, and the rest of us napping.

Thankfully, popular artists took halftime center stage at the end of the 1980s, and while results were somewhat mixed, halftime was now, at least, worth staying awake for and delaying the beer run. From performance stunts, to controversy, to genuine musicianship, here’s our list of some of the best Super Bowl halftime shows of all time.
