You can party in the parking lot, on the street, in a tent, in a bar, or in a hotel ballroom, and if the party has anything to do with the Super Bowl, then it’s a TAILGATE party. Here’s a list of the tailgating parties taking place in Indianapolis for Super Bowl 2012.

THE REAL TAILGATING EXPERIENCE:
For most football fans, tailgating means a party in the parking lot in the shadow of the stadium on game day with your fellow football fans. Indianapolis will have that too, but there are simply too many lots to list. However, the following information may be helpful to those who intend to drive and park near the stadium.

1. The streets around Lucas Oil Stadium will be closed to traffic for several days prior to and of course on Super Bowl Sunday. If you plan to park in or near the Lucas Oil Stadium lot, you will almost certainly need to purchase that parking pass in advance. The NFL will have control over the stadium parking lots.
2. Many of the parking garages and parking lots owned by the State of Indiana have been turned over to the NFL and therefore they will set the parking fees and the rules regarding tailgating activities in those lots. There are some 6,500 spaces being made available by the State of Indiana to the NFL. Most of them are North and due East of the stadium. No word yet on whether tailgating will be permitted in those lots by the NFL.
3. Many other private parking areas will be made available by the owners of those lots. The fees for those lots will be at a premium. Estimates put spots for many lots at $400.00 to as high as $1,000.00 per parking spot. Each lot owner will set the tailgating policy for their particular lot.
4. One of the larger privately owned parking lot owners is The Indianapolis Zoo located a few blocks Northwest of the Lucas Oil Stadium will provide Super Bowl parking.
